Knew Lemon?
Before it all
Lemon was born on April 8th, 2015, a racing thoroughbred from the start. She even had a tattoo in her ear '45C' which meant April (4th month), 201(5), C for third of her litter.
Lemon raced 130 times and won 20 of them: more wins than anyone else in her litter.

When her racing days were done, Lemon was sent to jail. It wasn't for grand theft of our hearts (yet)...It was a training program. Greyhounds don't really know how to be "pets" and she was trained to be a therapy dog. She even won an award for Most Improved!
Off to work
Her first job was to support a family with two special-needs boys, but they were too rough on a gentle girl like her. So she went into foster care, which is where our story really begins.
On to Chapter 1Chapter 1
Virginia Β· 2020
I found Lemon through the Blue Ridge Greyhound Adoption. Originally, I was set to pick from five dogs that were coming right from the track... But out of the blue I got a phone call: "We have another option for you, her name is Lemon, she's 5 years old and was just returned to foster. You need to let us know by tonight if you want her." One photo of her and I was sold, I went to pick her up the very next day.
Gotcha Day! She didn't know it but this was the last gotcha day she'd have..and forgive my attempt at covid-long-hair.
The first photo at home in Falls Church. Squeezed onto our tiny balcony and afraid she'd make a jump for it, I still had her leash on.
Her first roach! A greyhound's sign that they are safe and comfortable.
Chapter 2
Colorado Β· 2021
Covid meant we were looking for something away from the big city, so we headed west. If you remember, February of 2021 had a HUGE snap snowstorm across the country. And this poor southern girl got more snow than she bargained for.
We did our best to bundle up!
Perhaps winter got to Lemon, she was MOODY.
Chapter 3
Texas Β· 2023
We loaded up the car and with my Mom & Tony and caravanned down to Austin, Texas! A big 'ol stretch after a long 2 days in the car!
To be fair, it still was winter, so blankets were mandatory
In 2025 we moved to East Austin, and I think Lemon was happy to get out of the apartment life.
Her new Queendom
Thanksgiving with Juni, Bia, and Steven
Chapter 4
Bouder Β· 2026
We found our way to Boulder right as the temperatures cooled, and the colors changed. Lemon immediately doubled the length of her walks!
"Why are you photographing me instead of TUCKING ME IN?"
November Β· 2026
Sadly, shortly after returning to Colorado, we learned that Lemon had cancer. Specifically axial osteosarcoma (bone cancer of her skull). Given the location and stage, we opted not to perform surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. Lemon was going to live her best life for as long as she could.
Unfortunately, osteosarcoma is extremely aggressive, and within weeks of her diagnosis she was having issues breathing and eating.
So, on November 4th, we went to the park for the last time where she ran like she was back on the track. She came back for cookies and cream ice cream from Sweet Cow, and plopped down outside in the sun for a nap.
Lemon was put to rest with no pain, no discomfort, and surrounded by nature and those that loved her. She was the sweetest girl, and my best friend.
Notes and photos from the people who loved her too.
